About Grips

You probably haven't given your grip much thought. You buy the racket and play with it until the grip gets dirty or worn. Then you buy the first, or only, grip in the shop and slap it on anyhow and on you go. There is a choice.

Grips vs Overgrips.

Grips are designed to be wrapped directly on the bare racket handle. Overgrips are designed to be wrapped over the racket grip and are generally quite thin - usually between 0.3mm and 0.8mm.

Overgrips are intended to be wear items - that is they wear out quite quickly and so are replaced frequently. Using overgrips means the grip lasts much longer and requires less frequent replacement. The grip remains fresh if overgrips are used and replaced frequently. Overgrips tend to have a wider variety of colours so if you feel it is important to match your outfit and grip the choice is yours. Many professional players use overgrips.

Replacement grips are more substantial and will generally last longer than an overgrip. PU grips are at the lower end of the price spectrum and do not wear as well as some of the more expensive grips.

Both overgrips and replacement grips come in a wide variety of thicknesses, colour, cushioning and sweat absorbing qualities.

Prices.

Good quality grips currently retail at between £7 and £10 each. Cheap PU grips come in anywhere between £3 and £5. Overgrips individually cost between £1 and £3.
